Reduction to generalized Hessenberg form and inverse spectral problems (Q1184474)

The author addresses the question under what conditions elements of the classical Lie algebras \(C_ n\), \(D_ n\) can be reduced by similarity transforms to the generalized Hessenberg form. He completely solves an inverse spectral problem for symmetric generalized Hessenberg matrices related to classical Lie algebras. Preliminary knowledge of the structural properties of semisimple Lie algebras is not necessary for reading the paper. Nevertheless the appendix describes a natural abstract Lie-algebraic setting for the constructions.
