This paper extends Zel'manov's classification of Jordan triple systems and Jordan pairs of hermitian type from linear to quadratic systems. Specifically, an ideal of the free special Jordan triple system on an infinite set of variables is called hermitian if it is closed under permutations of the variables and formation of \(n\)-tads for odd \(n\geq 5\). Let \(T\) be a prime quadratic Jordan triple system such that all ideals of \(T\) are semiprime, \(T\) is a homomorphic image of a special Jordan triple system, and there is a hermitian ideal of polynomials which do not all vanish identically on \(T\). Then there is a *-prime associative triple system \(R\) with involution such that \(T\) contains an ample subspace of the hermitian system \(H(R,^*)\) as a nonzero ideal and such that \(T\) is contained in the hermitian system \(H(Q,^*)\), where \(Q\) is the Martindale associative triple system of symmetric quotients of \(R\). This theorem implies analogous results for Jordan pairs and simple Jordan triple systems and pairs. Key elements of the proof are the use of associative triple systems in place of the associative algebras in Zel'manov's work, an analysis of the absorption of \(n\)-tads by an hermitian ideal, and the use of this analysis to prove that \(T\) is special.
