The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually. The First European Workshop on ``Progress in Distributed Operating Systems and Distributed Systems Management'' was organized for purpose of fostering cooperation among industrial and academic communities. As the workshop title indicates, special emphasis was placed on research activities in distributed operating systems and management of distributed systems, and also on object-oriented systems, portable network operating systems, computer networks, and open systems. The progress of distributed operating systems history in the last years has been remarkable. The field has grown with the new, modern LANs. The new distributed operating systems (as AMOEBA, PEACE, Chorus, BirliX) provide an ever-more-useful view of the systems. This workshop looked at just a few of the recent developments. Its goal was to show where operating systems research has led us and where it might lead us in the future.
