[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] Attribute grammars are one of the fundamental concepts in computer science. They were introduced more than 20 years ago by \textit{Donald E. Knuth}. The proceedings reflect the ``Workshop on attribute grammars and their applications (WAGA)'', which took place 1990 in Paris. The workshop was organised with 3 invited and 21 contributed papers. The first lecturer was \textit{Donald E. Knuth} who looked back to the roots of attribute grammars. In his very interesting paper ``The genesis of attribute grammars'' he described his work and the stimulating discussions during the 60s and 70s. Besides the invited paper of Knuth there were 2 other ones by \textit{R. Wilhelm}, ``Tree transformations, functional languages and attribute grammars'', and by \textit{W. H. Waite}, ``Use of attribute grammars in compiler construction''. Relationships between attribute grammars and other formalisms like extended affix grammars, abstract interpretation, object-oriented and functional programming were considered by 4 presentations. There were also 4 papers describing special aspects of systems for compiler construction. This systems were FNC-2 (INRIA), OPTRAN (University of Saarbrücken), OLGA (INRIA) and Elegant (Philips Research Labs. Eindhoven). Incremental evaluation methods were studied by 4 papers and Natural language processing was demonstrated by 3 lectures. Compiler construction was considered by 1 presentation and 3 additional papers describing special aspects of systems for this purpose. 2 presentations discussed the problems of parallel evaluation and 2 lectures were devoted to interactive applications. Additional 2 presentations considered the special problems of grammar hierarchies and counting polyominoes using attribute grammars. These proceedings give a good impression of the various activities in computer science related to attribute grammars.
