Let \(y=\varphi(x,t)\) be a solution of the equation \(y''=(q(x)-t^ 2)y=0\) \((a\leq x\leq b)\) satisfying \(y(a)=\sin\alpha\), \(y'(a)=-\cos\alpha\) \((\alpha\) is fixed). Let \(y_ n=\varphi (x,t_ n)=\varphi(x,-t_ n)\) be eigenfunctions (to the eigenvalues \(\lambda_ n=t_ n^ 2\); \(n=1,2,\ldots)\) satisfying moreover \(y(b)=\sin\beta\), \(y'(b)=-\cos\beta\) \((\beta\) is fixed). Using the common orthogonal series expansion \(f(x)=\sum\hat f(n)y_ n(x)/\| y_ n\|^ 2\) \((\hat f(n)\equiv\int^ b_ af(x)y_ n(x)dx)\), the authors derive three inversion formulae for the continuous Sturm-Liouville transformation \(F(t)=\int^ b_ af(x)\varphi(x,t)dt\). Certain identities for the Wronskian, theory of biorthogonal sequences and nonharmonic Fourier series, Poisson summation formula, and Paley-Wiener spaces are used for the main tools. The results can be partly generalized to the singular case \(b=\infty\).
