A numerical scheme for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (Q1192159)

A nonlinear partial difference equation is considered, which has its limiting form the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The scheme is implemented and compared with other numerical schemes. In particular it is found that the proposed method is fine for small amplitudes but that the split-step Fourier method of \textit{R. H. Hardin} and \textit{F. D. Tappert} [Application of the split-step Fourier method to the numerical solution of nonlinear and variable coefficient wave equations. SIAM Rev. Chronicle 15, 423 (1973)] is better for large amplitudes.
