The asymptotic behaviour of polynomials \(B_ n(x)\) satisfying a three- term recurrence \[ B_ n(z)=(1+\beta_ nz)B_{n-1}(z)+\alpha_ nz^ \lambda B_{n-2}(z),\quad\lambda\in\{1,2\}, \] is studied, assuming conditions on the convergence of the recurrence coefficients \(\alpha_ n\), \(\beta_ n\). In particular sufficient conditions are given to ensure that \(B_ n(z/n)\to e^{\gamma z}\) for all complex values \(z\). Such polynomials typically appear as numerators and denominators of continued fractions, including regular \(C\)-fractions, general \(T\)-fractions, associated continued fractions and \(J\)-fractions.
