The authors give an integral representation on \(BV(\Omega;R^ m)\) of the functional \(\overline F(u,\Omega)\) defined by relaxation as \[ \overline F(u,\Omega)=\inf_{u_ h\to u} \liminf \int_ \Omega f(\nabla u_ h)dx, \] where the infimum is taken over all sequences \(\{u_ h\}\) in \(C^ 1(\Omega;R^ m)\) converging to \(u\) in \(L^ 1_{\text{loc}}(\Omega;R^ m)\). The function \(f\) in the integral is assumed quasi-convex in the sense of Morrey and verifies a linear growth: \(0\leq f(\xi)\leq M(1+|\xi|)\) for all \(\xi\in M^{m\times n}\). Denoting by \(f_ \infty\) the recession function of \(f\), they prove that \[ \overline F(u,\Omega)=\int_ \Omega f(\nabla_ u)dx+\int_ \Omega f_ \infty\left({D^ s u\over | D^ s u|}\right)| D^ s u|, \] where \(\nabla_ u\) is the density of the absolutely continuous part of the measure \(Du\) with respect to Lebesgue measure, \(D^ s u\) is the singular part of \(Du\), and \({D^ s u\over | D^ s u|}\) is the Radon-Nikodym derivative of \(D^ s u\) with respect to its variation \(| D^ s u|\).
