Summary: The aim of this note is to present some connections between the classical spaces of functions of bounded variation and other classes of functions whose variation is in some sense controlled, namely the GBV classes introduced by \textit{E. de Giorgi} and \textit{L. Ambrosio} [Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, VIII. Ser., Rend., Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat. 82, No.2, 199-210 (1988; Zbl 0715.49014)] as well as the classes BBV, LBV, \(GBV^*\) defined in this paper. Proofs and further results will appear elsewhere.
