The author considers nonlinear equations of the form: Find \(u\in R\): \(G(u)=0\) in \(S\) arising from some quasilinear elliptic boundary value problem in \(\Omega=(-1,1)^ 2\). The projective Newton method consists in determining a sequence of approximations \(\{u_ n\}\) by \(u_ n\in R_ n\): \((v,G'(u_{n-1})(u_ n-u_{n-1})+G(u_{n-1}))=0\), \(\forall v\in S^*_ n\), where \(R_ n\) resp. \(S^*_ n\) denote finite dimensional subspaces of \(R\) resp. \(S^*\) (dual space of \(S)\), with \(\dim R_ n=\dim S^*_ n<\infty\). The author presents estimates of the error \(u-u_ n\) in various norms for the spectral method \((R_ n=P^ 0_{N(n)}=\) space of polynomials of degree \(\leq N(n)\) in each variable vanishing on \(\partial\Omega\), with \(N(n-1)\leq N(n)\leq N^*N(n-1)\) for some \(N^*\in N)\) with Galerkin- Ritz-projection \((S^*_ n=R_ n)\) and with the collocation projection \((S^*_ n\) is spanned by \(\delta\)-functionals corresponding to the collocation points).
