In this article the author poses the following question: If \(G\) is the internal direct product of subgroups \(H_{1}, H_{2}, \ldots , H_{n}\), what conditions can be placed on a subgroup \(H\) so that \(G\) is also the internal direct product of \(H_{k}, H_{k+1}, \ldots , H_ {n}\) for some \(k<n\)? Examples are provided to show that certain conditions, which appear to answer the question because of the close relationship between internal and external direct products, do not suffice. The author then gives a set of conditions which answer the question if \(G\) is finite but not when \(G\) is infinite.
