The displacement of a matrix \(A\) is a new matrix \(A - XAY\) for some pair of matrices \(X\) and \(Y\). In the paper, the unit shift matrix, \(U\), and its inverse, \(V\), are taken for \(X\) and \(Y\), respectively. The displacement of a Toeplitz matrix is a rank-two matrix. Any matrix whose displacement has low rank is called near-Toeplitz. The paper studies the properties of displacements of matrices. Two formulas for the displacement of the product of two matrices are presented and applied to such problems as the multiplication of Toeplitz matrices, inversion of near-Toeplitz matrices and finding the eigenvalues of a special class of matrices.
