Many applications of wavelets (e.g., to image processing and numerical methods for partial differential equations) require multiresolution analysis on domains or manifolds in \(\mathbb R^d\), rather than on all of \(\mathbb R^d\). \textit{A. Cohen, W. Dahmen} and \textit{R. DeVore} [Multiscale decompositions on bounded domains, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. (to appear)] have recently constructed a multiresolution analysis which applies to a fairly large class of domains \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb R^d\) and have shown that various smoothness spaces can be characterized by this multiresolution. Their analysis applies for example to the Besov spaces \(B^\alpha_q (L_p) (\Omega)\) provided \(p \geq 1\). The purpose of this paper is to show that the Besov spaces for \(p < 1\) (which are important in analyzing nonlinear methods such as image compression or noise removal) can also be characterized by multiresolution analysis. The author characterizes the Besov regularity of functions on Lipschitz domains by means of their error of approximation by certain sequences of operators. As an application they consider wavelet decompositions and characterize Besov quasi-norms in terms of weighted sequence norms.
