Let \(M^G\) denote the set of all \(G\)-fixed elements for a group \(G\) of automorphisms of a von Neumann algebra \(M\). The following theorem on Galois correspondence between subgroups and subalgebras is proved: Let \(M\) be a factor with separable predual and \(G\) a compact group of automorphisms of \(M\) whose action is minimal, i.e., \({M^G}'\cap M\) consists of multiples of the identity. Then the map \(H\to M^H\) gives a one-to-one correspondence between the lattice of all closed subgroups of \(G\) and that of all intermediate subfactors \(N\) with \(M^G\subset N\subset M\). Also Galois correspondence for intermediate von Neumann algebras in the case of crossed products by outer actions of discrete groups is obtained. The arguments in the proofs of these interesting and non-trivial results are based on a nice combination of the modular theory, index theory for infinite factors, injective factors and compact group actions. The heart of the proof consists in proving the existence of a normal conditional expectation of \(M\) onto any intermediate subfactor between \(M^G\) and \(M\). Stated results are further extended to the case of minimal actions of compact Kac algebras.
