The paper revisits the classical scheme of the inverse scattering transform for the integration of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. The author's objective is to interpret the scheme as a straightforward analog of linear problems formulated in terms of infinite matrices. The central point of the analysis is to understand the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko integral equation, which is the main ingredient of the classical inverse-scattering scheme, in terms of the infinite matrices. A generalization is also developed for versions of the inverse scattering (two-component systems of the first-order linear differential equations) which are used for the integration of nonlinear evolutional partial differential equations other than the KdV one.
