In this rather long paper the authors investigate the influence of various effects on the expressions for criteria of macroscopic shear-band localization in single crystals. Practically, this investigation is based, like previous studies of the same problem, on an analysis of acceleration waves, and it takes advantage of the notion of instantaneous adiabatic acoustic tensor. The influential effects studied are: (i) the role of spatial covariance in relation to the formulation of evolution equations and the problem of the plastic spin; (ii) the nonsatifaction of Schmidt' rule by the material, (iii) the evolution of the microstructure, (iv) thermomechanical couplings, (v) the role played by a nondissipative thermal term (in practice this is negligible), and finally, (vi) cooperative phenomena (so-called synergetics). To attain their aim, after a short presentation of experimental evidences and physical motivations, the authors present first the theory of finitely deformable thermoviscoplastic single crystals in the relevant invariant framework. The typical response of a rate-independent thermo-elasto-plastic single crystal corresponds then to a vanishing relaxation time. Symmetric double slip and single slip are the two processes considered for the shear-band formation. The investigation per se considers the propagation of acceleration waves for these two special cases during an adiabatic dynamic process. Necessary conditions for these two processes are obtained analytically. Following a material identification, numerical results are presented for the case of symmetric double slip. The paper concludes with a thorough discussion of the above-mentioned effects and also with a satisfactory comparison to available experimental data.
