The authors consider evolution partial differential equations of the form \[ \tfrac{du}{dt}+ Au+R(u)=0,\qquad u(0)=u_{0} \] on a Hilbert space \(H\), which are known to possess an inertial manifold (that is, a smooth finite-dimensional, exponentially attracting, positively invariant manifold which contains the global attractor). The operator \(A\) is assumed to be a densely defined sectorial linear operator with compact inverse. That is why, it is possible to choose \(\xi\geq 0\) such that all eigenvalues of \(\widetilde A=A+\xi I\) have strictly positive real part. For \(\alpha\in (0,1)\) define \({\widetilde A}^{\alpha}=({\widetilde A}^{-\alpha})^{-1}\) where \[ {\widetilde A}^{-\alpha} ={1\over{\Gamma(\alpha)}} \int_{0}^{\infty} t^{\alpha-1} e^{-{\widetilde A}t}dt. \] Denote by \(D({\widetilde A}^{\alpha})\) the domain of \({\widetilde A}^{\alpha}\) and set \({\widetilde A}^{0}=I\). Later, it is assumed that \(R(u)\) satisfies sufficient conditions so that the above problem generates a semigroup \(S(t):\;D({\widetilde A}^{\gamma}) \to D({\widetilde A}^{\gamma})\) for some \(\gamma\geq 0\) which is locally Lipschitz continuous on \(D({\widetilde A}^{\gamma})\) for each \(t\geq 0\). The authors show that for the above class of PDE with \(C^{1}\)-inertial form certain numerical approximations possess an inertial form close to that of the underlying PDE in the \(C^{1}\)-norm.
