    The Neuberger condition (*) \(\lim\sup_{t\to 0}\| T(t)-I\| <2\) implying analyticity of a Banach space \(C_0\)-semigroup \((T(t))_{t\geq o}\) is effectively combined with the Stein interpolation theorem for operators between weighted \(L^p\) spaces. The studied semigroups in \(L^p\left( (0,1), dx/\alpha (x)\right),1\leq p<\infty\), with \(\alpha \in C[0,1],\;\alpha (x)>0\) in (0,1), are generated by operators \(\left (A,D(A)\right)\), given by \(Au= \alpha u''\) under domain-dependent requirements, say, \(1/\alpha \in L^1\left ( (0,1), dx\right)\) or also \(\alpha \in C^1(0,1)\). The \(D(A)\) include either Dirichlet or (mainly) Neumann boundary conditions. The \(m\)-dissipativity of such \(\left (A,D(A)\right)\) established when \(p=2\) (here \(A=A^*\leq 0\)) and \(p=1\) yields, for the corresponding \(T(t)=T_p(t),t\geq 0\), the estimates \(\| T_2(t)-I\| \leq 1\) and \(\| T_1(t)-I\| \leq 2\). Then, by interpolation, (*) holds for the \(T(t)\) induced in \(L^p\), \(1<p<2\), and, by duality, when \(2<p<\infty\) as well. Related studies are indicated [\textit{V. Barbu}, \textit{A. Favini} and \textit{S. Romanelli}, Funkc. Ekvacioj, Ser. Int. 39, No. 3, 421-448 (1996; Zbl 0873.35041)] and an application to the linear Kompaneets equation is considered.
