New plane wave time-domain algorithms are presented. The proposed algorithms accelerate the computational analysis of the transient surface scattering phenomena. These algorithms also permit the fast evaluation of the transient fields satisfying the wave equation. The cost associated with the computation of fields at \(N_S\) observations produced by a surface bound source density represented in terms of \(N_S\) spatial samples for the \(N_t\) time scales is as \(O(N_t\cdot N^2_S)\) if classical time-domain integral equation based methods are used. It is shown that this cost can be reduced to \(O(N_t\cdot N^{4/3}_S\cdot\log N_S)\) and \(O(N_t\cdot N_S\cdot\log N_S)\) using two-level and multilevel schemes of the proposed type, respectively. These algorithms are time-domain counterparts of frequency domain fast multiple methods and make feasible the practical broadband analysis of scattering from large complex bodies.
