In the study of tame blocks of finite groups, \textit{K. Erdmann} [Blocks of tame representation type and related algebras, Lect. Notes Math. 1428 (1990; Zbl 0696.20001)] obtained three classes of algebras which are essentially given by their stable Auslander-Reiten quivers, and can be defined explicitly by generators and relations. According to their defect groups they are said to be of dihedral, semidihedral, or quaternion type. Erdmann classified these algebras up to Morita equivalence. In the present article, the author gives an almost complete description of their derived equivalence classes. In case of the family \(\text{SD}(2{\mathcal B})_3\) of semidihedral algebras defined in terms of polynomials \(p,q\in K[X]\) and certain relations modulo the socle, the study of derived equivalences leads to an elimination of \(p\), \(q\) and relations modulo socle. This enables the author to introduce a new family \(\text{SD}(2{\mathcal B})_4\) (depending on an integer \(s\) and \(c\in\{0,1\}\)) which now replaces the old one. For the families \(\text{SD}(2{\mathcal B})_1\) and \(\text{SD}(2{\mathcal B})_2\) the question remains open whether there are derived equivalences between them. However, the author gives some evidence that there should be none. For algebras of dihedral type, the determination of derived equivalence classes has been completed recently by \textit{M. Kauer} [Thesis, Stuttgart (1998)]. There he gives a representation as factor algebras of graph orders with exception of \(\text{D}(2{\mathcal A})\) and \(\text{D}(2{\mathcal B})\) in characteristic two and \(c=1\). By use of \textit{D. J. Benson}'s characterization of graph algebras [Representations and cohomology, I (1991; Zbl 0718.20001), Theorem 4.18.3], this implies that the non-graphical families cannot be derived equivalent to any other family of dihedral algebras. Applying his description of derived equivalence classes, the author proves that all the algebras in Erdmann's list are tame: Firstly, two derived equivalent symmetric algebras are stably equivalent, hence of the same representation type by \textit{H. Krause}'s theorem [Comment. Math. Helv. 72, No. 2, 266-284 (1997; Zbl 0901.16008)]. As the graphical dihedral algebras are special biserial, they are tame. For most of the algebras of semidihedral or quaternion type, degenerations into dihedral algebras are given, which proves their tameness by a result of \textit{C. Geiss} [Arch. Math. 64, No. 1, 11-16 (1995; Zbl 0828.16013)]. The few remaining algebras are treated separately.
