In this article is studied the ideal structure of the \(C^*\)-algebra \(\Theta_X\) generated by a Hilbert bimodule \(X\) in the sense of \textit{M. V. Pimsner} [Fields Inst. Commun. 12, 189-212 (1997; Zbl 0871.46028)] when the underlying \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) is unital and the right module \(X_A\) is full and projective. If a certain condition (I-freeness) generalizing \textit{J. Cuntz} and \textit{W. Krieger's} [Invent. Math. 56, 251-268 (1980; Zbl 0434.46045)] is true then any faithful representation of \(X\) in a \(C^*\)-algebra \(D\) can be extended to a faithful representation of \(\Theta_X\) in \(D\); in particular if \(A\) is \(X\)-simple then \(\Theta_X\) is simple. If a stronger condition (II-freeness) generalizing \textit{J. Cuntz's} [Invent. Math. 63, 25-40 (1981; Zbl 0461.46047)] is true, then there is a bijection between the closed ideals of \(\Theta_X\) and a certain class of closed ideals in \(A\). Some examples are investigated as the case of proper inclusions of simple \(C^*\)-algebras with finite \textit{Y. Watatani} index [`Index for \(C^*\)-subalgebras', Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 424 (1990; Zbl 0697.46024)]. More generally, it is proved that if \(A\) is simple and purely infinite (respectively non-nuclear) then \(\Theta_X\) is purely infinite (respectively non-nuclear).
