The authors derive stable and accurate interface conditions based on the SAT penalty method for the linear advection-diffusion equation which are functionally independent of the spatial order of accuracy and depend only on the form of the discrete operator. They prove stability and show that the interface treatment is conservative. They construct new finite-difference operators of up to sixth order. Stability and accuracy are demonstrated for a nonlinear Burgers' equation in a domain with randomly distributed interfaces.
