The author continues his research in weighted function spaces on the real line where the weights are Erdős weights. The relations between the degree of weighted polynomial approximation and certain newly defined moduli of smoothness has already been investigated by the author and jointly with \textit{D. S. Lubinsky} [J. Approximation Theory 93, No. 3, 349-398 (1998; Zbl 0907.41010) and ibid. 94, No. 3, 333-382 (1998; Zbl 0915.41013)]. Actually, the reader would do well to look in one of these papers for the correct definition of the moduli of smoothness which are wrongly defined in Def. 1.2 of the paper under review. Other careless mistakes include the definition of \(W_{A,B}(x)\) in (1.3), and the definition of the difference operators \(\Delta^r_h\), in the middle of p. 223. As for the contents of the paper, the author proves some properties of the moduli which are similar to known properties of the various classical moduli like the following. Let \(w_{r,p}(f,W,t)\) denote the modulus of smoothness of \(f\), where \(W\) is an Erdős weight, \(0<p\leq\infty\) and \(r\geq 1\). Given a small enough but fixed constant \(D>0\), there is a constant \(C\) such that for each \(\varepsilon>0\), we have for all \(0<t<D\) and uniformly for \(1\leq\lambda\leq D\), \[ w_{r,p}(f,W,\lambda t)\leq C\lambda^{r+\varepsilon}w_{r,p}(f,W,t). \] These properties are used to characterize Hölder classes with respect to these moduli as approximation spaces, i.e., by means of the degree of approximation in the weighted norm.
