Let the transfer function of a SISO system be \(W(s,q)\), where \(q\) is a vector of uncertain parameters restricted to a given domain \(U\). The goal of the paper is to construct (in the complex plane) the value sets \[ F(\omega)=\bigl\{W(j\omega,q)\mid q\in Q\bigr\} \] for every frequency \(\omega\). The developed technique is based on a general theorem of the structure of the boundary of the image of a set under a nonlinear mapping and on the notion of inner and outer boundaries. As consequences of this general theorem one gets the Lyusternik theorem and necessary optimality conditions. The results are illustrated by some examples in which \(Q\) is a cube under linear, fractional linear, multilinear, and some other mappings. Applications in robust stability to robust regulators and in robust design are given. The authors hope to apply the theory to numerous other problems of robust synthesis.
