A model-matching problem in which the relative degree of the system is strictly larger than the relative degree of the model is analyzed and discussed. The analysis provides a better insight into the limit of performance which is inherently associated to the choice of a reference model and the notion of the distance between systems. Two types of reference models (linear and nonlinear) and two notations of distance \((\infty\)-norm and 2-norm based) in connection with a discrete-time nonlinear SISO system are under consideration. The upper and lower bounds for the maximum achievable performances as a function of the parameters of the reference model are given. The best \(\infty\)-norm-based \(r\)-steps-ahead predictor is developed. A simple numerical example illustrates the difference between the linear and nonlinear cases.
