A formulation which uses real functions and the boundary integral method, is given for the plane strain problem of the theory of elasticity in stresses in a simply connected domain. The authors find the arbitrary constants that occur in the solution. The method developed is applied to the solution of the first and second fundamental problems for a circle and for an ellipse. These applications not only confirm the validity of the formulation, but are also helpful in discussing some of its merits related to the non-simple geometry of the boundary. The applications of the method to the thermoelasticity and thermoelectromagnetic elasticity will be presented in the forthcoming papers.
