The paper remedies an omission in earlier work of \textit{W. J. Thron} [Am. J. Math. 66, 428-438 (1944; Zbl 0060.16409); ibid. 71, 112-120 (1949; Zbl 0040.02702)] and then offers a theorem with corollary. Concerning the theorem, \(c\) is real and \(r= \sqrt{(1+c^{2})}\). The closed unbounded region \({\mathbf B}[c]\) of points \(z\) for which \(|z+2c|\geq 2r\) is a best uniform simple convergence region for the continued fractions \(1/[b(1)+1/[b(2)+\cdots]]\) (i.e. with \(b(k)\in {\mathbf B}[c]\) \((k\geq 1) \) the continued fraction converges to a finite value \(C\) depending upon the \(b(k)\) and \({\mathbf B}[c]\) in this condition may not be replaced by a region \({\mathbf D}\) for which the strict inclusion relationship \({\mathbf B}[c]\subset {\mathbf D}\) holds; furthermore, a sequence of numbers \(e(c|k) > 0\) for which \(e(c|k) \rightarrow 0\) exists such that, \(N(k)\) being the \(k\)th convergent involving \(b(1),\ldots,b(k)\), \(|N(k)-C|\leq e(c|k)\) (\(k \geq 1\)), these relationships holding for all permissible sequences \( b(k)\) (\(k \geq 1\)). The corollary concerns Stieltjes fractions \(1/[d(1)z+1/[d(2)+1/[d(3)z+1/[d(4)+ \cdots ]]]]\) for which \(d(k)\geq d > 0\) (\(k \geq 1\)) and, with \(c\geq 0\), \(r\) is as above. Now, for \(z\) in a certain region, convergence is to a function \(f\) for which \(|\sqrt{z}f(z) - c|\leq r\). An error estimate involving a geometric progression is given.
