Discussed is a heuristic design procedure of fuzzy controllers for multivariable systems. As being rule-based constructs, the fuzzy controllers require a significant number of control rules. The main idea of the paper aimed at alleviating the design complexity occurring under those circumstances of increased dimensionality, is to decouple the control rules by introducing some intermediate variables. This decoupling leads to a substantial reduction of the overall number of the control rules. The realization of the decoupling is not supported by any complete and formally justifiable algorithm but heavily depends upon the available domain knowledge about the system under control. A numerical example involves a well-known control test bed of a single and three-stage inverted pendulum.
