    The authors consider a commutator of a multiplication operator \(M_ b\) and a Littlewood-Paley operator associated to a family of disjoint intervals \(I_ j\). It is defined by \[ [\Delta, M_ b]= \left( \sum_ j | M_ b S_{I_ j} f- S_{I_ j} M_ b f|^ 2\right)^{1/2}, \] where \(M_ b f= bf\) and \(S_ I\) is the partial sum operator associated to the interval \(I: \widehat{S_ I f}= \chi_ I\widehat f\). The authors show that for \(b\in \text{BMO}\) the commutator maps \(L^ p\) into itself if \(2< p<\infty\). Moreover, they establish various weighted norm inequalities when \(b\) belongs to a weighted \(\text{BMO}(\nu)\) space and the weight \(\nu\) is assumed to be in the standard \(A_ 2\) class. The main result then states that for given weights \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) the operator \([\Delta, M_ b]\) maps \(L^ p(\alpha)\) into \(L^ p(\beta)\) provided that \(2< p<\infty\) and \(\alpha= \nu^ p\beta\), where \(\alpha,\beta\in A_{p/2}\).
