    If \(\mathbf P\) is a property of groups, one can define a new property \({\mathbf P}'\) as follows: a group \(G\) has \({\mathbf P}'\) if, whenever \(H\) is a normal subgroup of \(G\) without property \(\mathbf P\), there is a finite \(G\)-quotient of \(H\) that does not have \(\mathbf P\). When \(\mathbf P\) is nilpotence or supersolubility, the property \({\mathbf P}'\) was studied under the names \(\nu\) and \(\sigma\) by the first author and the reviewer. Here the case where \(\mathbf P\) is polycyclicity is studied, when the property \({\mathbf P}'\) is called \(\pi\). Similar results are obtained for this property \(\pi\); in particular closure properties and the effect of imposing finiteness conditions are studied.
