The author characterizes, what he calls the canonical endomorphism for an irreducible inclusion of factors, among all endomorphisms. Given an infinite factor \(M\), he obtains a bijective correspondence between irreducible subfactors of finite index and irreducible ``\(Q\)-systems'' (a \(Q\)-system is a pair \((\lambda, S)\) consisting of an endomorphism \(\lambda\) of \(M\) and an isometry \(S\) in \(M\) intertwining \(\lambda\) and \(\lambda^ 2\), that satisfy certain natural relations). The subfactor corresponds to the action of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra if and only if \(\lambda^ 2\) is equivalent to a multiple of \(\lambda\). As a corollary, he obtains the following duality result for finite- dimensional Hopf algebras: There is a bijective correspondence between finite-dimensional Hopf algebras, up to isomorphism, and \(C^*\)-categories of endomorphisms associated to certain irreducible \(Q\)-systems, up to equivalence. The author uses in his constructions the case of canonical endomorphisms on \({\mathcal O}_ H\) considered by the reviewer. He also obtains some interesting results about the structure of this particular case. Moreover, he includes a proof, using this setup, for the result announced by Ocneanu that inclusions of depth 2 come from an action of a Hopf- algebra.
