A collection \(\mathbb{F}\) of proper maps into a locally compact Hausdorff space \((X, \tau)\) is said to fix the topology \(\tau\) if the only locally compact Hausdorff topology for \(X\) making every element of \(\mathbb{F}\) a proper map is \(\tau\) itself. This notion was defined in [\textit{F. Ancel}, ibid. 15, 99-110 (1983; Zbl 0529.26006)], and was inspired by work of the reviewer [ibid. 2, 193-198 (1972; Zbl 0237.54024)]. The author shows that if \(\mathbb{C}\) is the collection of \(C^ \infty\) injective paths into a compact differentiable \(n\)-manifold, then the topology is fixed, whereas the collection of analytic injective paths does not fix the topology of any analytic \(n\)-manifold. (One takes \(n \geq 2\) for all these results). A related notion is also considered in this paper. Suppose \(\mathbb{C}\) is a collection of subspaces of a topological space \((X, \tau)\). Then one says that \(\mathbb{C}\) determines the topology on \(X\) provided \(\tau\) is the weak topology generated by \(\mathbb{C}\). It is shown that if \(\tau\) is a first countable topology, \(\mathbb{C}\) is a collection of closed subspaces, and for every convergent sequence there is an element of \(\mathbb{C}\) which contains a subsequence, then \(\mathbb{C}\) determines the topology \(\tau\).
