The main contents of this paper are new, shorter proofs of \textit{R. H. Bing's} 1-ULC taming theorem [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 101, 294-305 (1961; Zbl 0109.154)] and side approximation theorem [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 77, 145-192 (1963; Zbl 0115.406)]. Most of this paper is drawn from the author's dissertation.
