The paper deals with equivalent norms on a real Banach space \(X\) that provide a given closed subspace \(M\) of \(X\) with good approximation properties. For a given \(M\subseteq X\) the multivalued mapping \(P: X\to 2^ M\) defined by \(x\mapsto \{m\in M\): \(\| x-m\|= \text{dist} (x,M)\}\) is called the metric projection onto \(M\). \(M\) is called proximinal if \(Px \neq\emptyset\) for each \(x\in X\), and \(M\) is a Chebyshev subspace if each \(Px\) is a singleton. With this notation the author proves among others the following interesting theorems: Theorem 1. Let \(M\) be any closed subspace of a Banach space \(X\). Then there is an equivalent norm on \(X\) such that \(M\) is proximinal and the associated metric projection has a continuous semilinear selection. Theorem 3. Let \(M\) be any closed subspace of a Banach space \(X\). If \(X/M\) has an equivalent strictly convex norm and an equivalent norm with Kadec property (= weak and norm topologies coincide on the unit sphere) then \(X\) has an equivalent norm which turns \(M\) into a Chebyshev subspace and which makes \(X/M\) locally uniformly convex. Finally, under the assumption of Theorem 3 an abstract mapping \(P: X\to 2^ M\) can be characterized as being a metric projection of \(M\) after renorming.
