Renorming, proximinal subspaces, and quotients in Banach spaces (Q2367596)

The main result of this paper is the following: Let \(X\) be a Banach space, \(V\) a closed linear subspace of \(X\) and let \(p\) and \(q\) be arbitrary equivalent norms on \(V\) and \(X/V\), respectively. Then there exists an equivalent norm on \(X\) whose restriction to \(V\) coincides with \(p\), whose quotient norm on \(X/V\) coincides with a positive multiple of \(q\) and which makes \(V\) proximinal. Also, the authors give a method for constructing antiproximinal subspaces of \(\ell_ 1(\Gamma)\) of any codimension. Consequently, properties of the linear continuous functionals which attain their norms are given.
