Let \(\pi= \otimes_ v \pi_ v\) be an automorphic representation of \(\text{GL} (2n)\) over a field \(F\). Under certain hypotheses, the authors construct a \(p\)-adic \(L\)-function which interpolates the special values of the complex \(L\)-function of \(\pi\). Let \({\mathcal O}_ F\) be the ring of integers of \(F\), and fix a prime \(\wp\) of \(F\). The authors construct a \(p\)-adic measure \(\mu\) on \(({\mathcal O}_ F)_ \wp^ \times\), and show that it is non-trivial under the following assumptions: (1) \(\pi_ \wp\) is unramified and ordinary; (2) a certain integral involving \(\pi_ \infty\) is nontrivial; (3) the complex \(L\)-function \(L(\pi\otimes \chi, {1\over 2})\) is non-zero for some Hecke character \(\chi\) which is trivial at infinity. This gives an interpolation of the complex \(L\)-function in the usual way: if \(\chi\) is any Hecke character on \({\mathbf A}_ F^ \times\) which is unramified outside \(\wp\) and trivial at \(\infty\), and if \(\chi_ 0\) is the corresponding character of \(({\mathcal O}_ F)_ \wp^ \times\), then \[ \int_{({\mathcal O}_ F)_ \wp^ \times} \chi_ 0 d\mu= L^*(\pi\otimes \chi,{\textstyle {1 \over 2}}), \] where \(L^* (\pi\otimes \chi,s)\) is a variant of the complex \(L\)-function with modified Euler factors at \(\wp\) and at infinity and normalized by dividing by certain periods. The authors show that the \(p\)-adic \(L\)-function thus obtained agrees with the conjectures of \textit{J. Coates} [\(L\)-functions and arithmetic, Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 153, 141-172 (1991; Zbl 0725.11029)]. They also give examples of automorphic representations on GL(4) which satisfy the hypotheses mentioned above, and discuss to what extent one might expect to remove those hypotheses.
