This paper investigates the concentric phase nucleation in which a dilatational martensitic phase transition occurs in a nonlinear isotropic hyperelastic cylinder subjected to an axially and radially symmetric loading at the boundary. A very special strain energy function, whose dilatational part causes the field equations to lose their ellipticity within a finite interval of dilatation, is adopted. A quasistatic deformation is assumed, and field equations and jump conditions in material description are employed. The nucleated embryo is thought to be separated from the matrix material by a slowly moving shock surface across which dilatation suffers a finite discontinuity. This surface which represents the transition layer is endowed with certain physical properties. The problem is solvable in quasistatic approximation, although it involves rather tedious algebra. Various cases, especially the stability of embryos, are studied in great detail, and the results are effectively displayed graphically.
