The aim of the paper is to refine and generalize the well known results of \textit{D. R. Yafaev} [cf. Commun. Math. Phys. 85, 177-196 (1982; Zbl 0509.35065)]. The author studies spectral properties at zero energy of the Schrödinger operator with a slowly decaying at infinity potential \(V(x)\), \(V(x)= O(| x|^{-p})\), \(0<p<2\). For the positive potential he proves that the resolvent is smooth near zero energy, what implies a rapid local decay of eigenfunctions. For the negative potential he proves that the resolvent is discontinuous at zero energy that implies a local decay at infinity no faster than \(O(t^{-1})\). The author formulates appropriate theorems also in terms of the spectral expansion of unity and the Schrödinger semigroup. All results are obtained by means of semiclassical methods and pseudodifferential operator calculus.
