The author extends a classical result of \textit{R. P. Boas} and \textit{H. Pollard} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 54, 518-522 (1948; Zbl 0032.15301)] on complete systems in \(L^2 [a, b]\). The key theorem states: Let \(\{f_n\}\) be a closed minimal system in \(L^p (E)\), where \(1\leq p< \infty\) and \(E\) is measurable with positive measure, such that its conjugate system is complete with respect to \(L^p (E)\), i.e. \(y^* (f) =0\) for all \(y^*\) in the conjugate system implying \(f=0\). Then for any positive integer \(N\) there is a bounded measurable function \(m\) such that the system \(\{m f_n\}^\infty_{n= N+1}\) is closed and minimal in \(L^p (E)\). Some variants of the key theorem are discussed.
