    The authors investigate rank 2 amalgams for a group \(G=\langle P_ 1, P_ 2\rangle\) over \(P_ 1\cap P_ 2=N_{P_ i}(S)\), \(S\in\text{Syl}_ 3(P_ i)\) (\(i=1,2\)) with \(O^{3'}(P_ 1/ O_ 3(P_ 1))\cong M_{11}\) and \(\overline{P_ 2}=O^{3'}(P_ 2/ O_ 3(P_ 2))\) a finite group of Lie type of rank 1 over a field of characteristic 3 or \(\overline{P_ 2}\cong\text{SL}_ 2(5)\) or \(L_ 2(5)\). (Note that \(\text{SL}_ 2(p^ n)\), \(p\) an odd prime, is generated by a pair of conjugate elements of order \(p\), as long as \(p^ n\neq 9\). But a subgroup of largest order of \(\text{SL}_ 2(9)\), which is generated by a pair of conjugate elements of order 3 is isomorphic to \(\text{SL}_ 2(5)\).) Under the usual assumptions \(C_{P_ i}(O_ 3 (P_ i))\leq O_ 3 (P_ i)\) (\(i=1,2\)) and \(\text{core}_ G B=1\) it is proved that: 1) \(O_ 3(P_ 1)\cong 3^ 5\) and 2) (i) \(\overline{P_ 2}\cong\text{SL}_ 2(9)\) and \(O_ 3(P_ 2)\cong 3^{1+4}\) or (ii) \(\overline{P_ 2}\cong\text{SL}_ 2(5)\) and \(O_ 3(P_ 2)\) is special of order \(3^ 6\) or (iii) \(\overline{P_ 2}\cong L_ 2(5)\) and \(O_ 3(P_ 2)\) is as in (ii). (As the authors remark, examples are provided by the sporadic simple groups \(Co_ 3\), \(Ly\) and \(Suz\), respectively.) The proof is in the spirit of the classification of weak \((B,N)\)-pairs given by \textit{A. Delgado} and \textit{B. Stellmacher} [in Groups and Graphs: New Results and Methods (DMV-Seminar, 6; Birkhäuser, 1985; Zbl 0566.20013)].
