Some amalgams in characteristic \(3\) related to \(Co_ 1\) (Q1369260)

The author considers some characteristic 3 amalgams related to sporadic groups. The author investigates groups \(G\) generated by subgroups \(P_1\), \(P_2\) such that (1) for \(S\in\text{Syl}_3(P_1\cap P_2)\) and \(B=N_{P_1\cap P_2}(S)\) we have \(B=N_{P_i}(S)\), \(i=1,2\), (2) \(B_G=\bigcap_{g\in G} B^g=1\), (3) \(O^{3'}(P_1)/O_3(P_1)\cong\text{PSL}_2(9)\), \(M_{11}\), \(M_{12}\) or \(2\cdot M_{12}\) and (4) \(O^{3'}(P_2)/O_3(P_2)\cong\text{PSL}_2(3)\), \(\text{SL}_2(3)\), \(A_5\), \(\text{SL}_2(5)\), \(2^4A_5\), \(2^{1+4}A_5\), \(\text{PSL}(2,9)\), \(\text{Sp}_4(3)\) or \(\text{PSp}_4(3)\). (5) \(C_{P_i}(O_3(P_i))\leq O_3(P_i)\), \(i=1,2\). This choice is motivated by the occurrence of these amalgams in \(McL\), \(Co_2\), \(Co_1\), \(Suz\), \(Co_3\), \(U_4(3)\), \(LyS\) and \(\text{PSp}_4(9)\). In fact the first series (3) of groups is involved in \(2M_{12}\), the second (4) in \(\text{Sp}_4(3)\). Using the amalgam method, the author proves that \(O_3(P_1)\) is elementary Abelian of order at most \(3^6\). Further, just the following situations for \((O^{3'}(P_1)/O_3(P_1),O^{3'}(P_2)/O_3(P_2))\) occur: \((\text{PSL}_2(9),\text{SL}_2(5))\), \((\text{PSL}_2(9),2^{1+4}A_5)\), \((2M_{12},\text{SL}_2(3))\), \((2M_{12},\text{Sp}_4(3))\), \((M_{11},\text{SL}_2(3))\), \((M_{11},\text{SL}_2(9))\), \((\text{PSL}_2(9),\text{SL}_3(3))\), \((M_{11},\text{SL}_2(5))\) and \((\text{PSL}_2(9),\text{SL}_2(9))\). Finally, he proves that the action of \(O^{3'}(P_i)\) on \(O_3(P_i)\) is as in the corresponding groups \(McL\), \(Co_2\), \(Co_1\), \(Suz\), \(Co_3\), \(U_4(3)\), \(LyS\) and \(\text{Psp}_4(9)\).
