The group \(\Gamma\) of affinities of a translation plane \(\Pi\) can be written as the semidirect product \(\Gamma = T \rtimes G\) where \(T\) denotes the subgroup of all translations and \(G\) the subgroup fixing a distinct point \(o\) of \(\Pi\). \(G\) is called the translation complement. In Geom. Dedicata 9, 307-316 (1980; Zbl 0393.51005) \textit{F. A. Sherk} constructed a new translation plane \(\Pi\) of order 27, such that \(G\) contained a commutative subgroup of order 27. Here the author characterizes this Sherk plane \(\Pi\) by the properties: \(\Pi\) is a non- semifield translation plane of order 27 such that \(G\) contains a commutative subgroup of order 27.
