In the paper under review, after study of \textit{J.-P. Vigué} [Ann. Mat. Pura Appl., IV. Ser. 176, 95-112 (1999; Zbl 0960.32012)] the author studies conditions under which a holomorphic mapping of a taut Riemann surface must be an automorphism. He proves the following: Let \(d\) be a \(C^1\) invariant distance on a taut Riemann surface and \(f :W\to W\) a holomorphic mapping. Suppose that there are two distinct points \(w\) and \(z\) in \(W\) such that \(f(w) = z\) and \(d(w, z) = d(w, f (z))\). Then \(f\) is an automorphism. This result can be regarded as an analogue involving invariant distance. He also proves an existence result for 1-dimensional holomorphic retracts in a taut complex manifold. To prove this, following Vigué, he uses analogues of the Carathéodory pseudodistance and the Kobayashi function on a complex manifold.
