Certain sequences of Hankel matrices of finite rank obtained from a given sequence of complex numbers are shown to be closely related to powers of companion matrices. This connection is used to construct the following: 1) polynomials whose zeros are certain functions of the zeros of other polynomials, for example the product of the zeros of two polynomials; 2) the least common multiple of a finite number of polynomials without factoring them; 3) a factor of the characteristic polynomial of a given matrix. The authors propose applications to signal processing, and it seems likely that this work will find many other applications as numerically efficient methods to implement their results are developed.
