An algorithm is proposed and a convergence theorem is established for the Galerkin discretization of the iterated Lavrentiev method applied to linear first kind Volterra integral equations with accretive operators. The number of iterations is fixed, a regularization parameter is to be chosen in dependence of the data error and the smoothness degree of the subspace (of a Hilbert space of functions) in which the true solution is known or assumed to be lying. The quality and efficiency of the method are illustrated in tabular and graphical form by its application to Abel's classical integral equation, the exact data function (which is perturbed by random noise) being one for which the exact solution is known.
