The emancipation of mathematical research publishing in the United States from German dominance (1878-1945) (Q1360075)

The study under review is mainly dedicated to the development of mathematical publishing in the States, between 1878 and 1945. Special stress is being laid on the German-American scientific relations in this period, on the supremacy of the German school of mathematics and on the consequences of Hitler's policy and of the two World Wars in changing the equilibrium of forces manifested in this especially important field of science: maths. After a relevant Introduction, the main sections of the study treat, in a comprehensive manner, the following topics: American Mathematical Research Publishing before the First World War, Economic and Political Problems after World War I: A 1924 Memo by G. H. Hardy, The Problem of ``Advanced Monographs'', The Emancipation of American Research Journals, Growing Internationalization in Mathematical Publishing around 1930 and Nazi Interference -- Springer's American Policies, Beginning Governmental Support: The Alien Property Custodian Republication Program. In the end, an appendix listing the main mathematical monographs written by American and German authors is provided.
