This paper continues the study begun in part I [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser A 61, 30--41 (1996; Zbl 0878.16004)]. Let \(R\) be a ring with identity. A unital right \(R\)-module \(X\) is a \(CS\)-module if every submodule is essential in a direct summand of \(X\). Let \(M\) be a right \(R\)-module such that \(M=\bigoplus_{i\in I}M_i\) is a direct sum of uniform right \(R\)-modules \(M_i\) with local endomorphism rings. It is proved that every uniform submodule is essential in a direct summand of \(M\) if and only if \(M_i\oplus M_j\) is a \(CS\)-module for all \(i\neq j\) in \(I\) and the following chain condition holds on right ideals of \(R\): for every choice of \(x_n\in M_{i_n}\), with distinct \(i_n\in I\), such that \(\bigcap^\infty_{n=1} r_R(x_n)\supseteq r_R(y)\) for some \(y\in M_j\), \(j\in I\), the ascending chain \(\bigcap^\infty_{k=n} r_R(x_k)\) \((n\in \mathbb N)\) becomes stationary. (Here \(r_R(m)\) denotes the annihilator in \(R\) of an element \(m\in M\).) The author goes on to consider when a right \(R\)-module \(N\) has the property that every direct sum of copies of \(N\) is \(CS\) and when a ring \(R\) has the property that every free right \(R\)-module is \(CS\), obtaining several interesting new results and new proofs of some known results.
