The authors continue their systematic investigations of the Fourier multiplier algebra \(M_p(\Gamma)\) for \(L^p(G)\), \(1<p<\infty \), for locally compact abelian groups \(G\) with dual group \(\Gamma\) [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 41, 472-488 (1990; Zbl 0693.42009); C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 318, 817-820 (1994; Zbl 0811.42002)]. The key role is played by functions (or sequence) spaces, consisting of functions of uniformly bounded \(q\)-variation over dyadic intervals, as they occur in Paley-Littlewood theory. These spaces are shown to be Banach algebras with respect to pointwise multiplication, continuously embedded into \(M_p(\Gamma)\), if \(|1/p-1/2|<1/q\). For \(G=R\) this result is due to \textit{R. Coifman, J. L. Rubio de Francia} and \textit{S. Semmes} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 306, 351-354 (1988; Zbl 0643.42010)]. The main results build essentially on the theory of Stone-type spectral families for continuous one-parameter groups over Banach spaces, and spectral integration methods using this tool. Among others corresponding results for \(G=Z,T\) or \(b(R)\), the Bohr compactification of \(R\), are derived.
