It was established in a work of \textit{M. E. Walter} [J. Funct. Anal. 17, 131-160 (1974; Zbl 0287.43008)] that for noncommutative locally compact groups and for the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra \(B(G)\), which is the set of finite linear combinations of positive definite functions and which is isometrically isomorphic as a Banach algebra to the algebra \(M^1(\widehat{G})\) of finite regular Borel measures on the dual objects \(\widehat{G}\), there exists a well behaved dual theory in the following sense: (1) \(B(G)\) is a complete invariant of \(G\), i.e. \(B(G_1)\) and \(B(G_2)\) are isometrically isomorphic as Banach algebras if and only if \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) are topologically isomorphic as locally compact groups, and (2) there is an explicit process for recovering \(G\) given its ``dual object \(B(G)\)''. On a locally compact groupoid \(G\), the authors define the set \({\mathcal P}(G)\) of positive definite functions with respect to a fixed Haar system and the corresponding linear span \({\mathcal B}(G)\). The main results of the paper are: \({\mathcal B}(G)\) is a Banach algebra (section 6), and in fact \({\mathcal B}(G)\) is isomorphic to a Banach algebra of completely bounded operators on the space \(M^*(G)\) (Theorem 4.1) on \(G\) and the elements of \({\mathcal P}(G)\) occur as completely positive operators (section 5).
