The authors present a conical Navier-Stokes solver based on a detailed study of asymmetric vortex formation over a cone at incidence. For calculation of steady-state solution, approximate factorization scheme with Steger-Warming's flux splitting in the implicit part and Roe's finite difference space discretization in the explicit part are used; local time stepping and Jacobian freezing techniques are applied as well. For time-accurate calculations, iterative procedure is incorporated into the scheme. The investigations of the influence of grid refinement on the quality of numerical solution, the asymmetric vortex formation and the flow field topology are performed by means of test problems, and comparison of numerical results with experimental data is given.
